Sending a secure e-mail (digital signing/encryption)

Important:
You must use the Netscape Messenger (under Netscape Communicator version 4.5 or above).

The following screen layouts may differ from those that you see, depending on the version of the Netscape browser that you are running on your computer. The flow diagram below shows the main steps.

For procedures to import .P12 certificate file to Netscape, please refer to Importing and Viewing your e-Cert (PDF Format).

i) Verifying your certificate

  1. On the Netscape navigation toolbar, click the Security button.
  2. Click the Messenger link on the screen above to review your e-mail options. Your Messenger settings are displayed.


  3. Make sure that the Certificate for your Signed and Encrypted Messages is correct, and click OK.
  4. You should now check the existence and proper setup of the Hongkong Post Root CA Certificate in your Netscape browser. Click the Signer link in the above Messenger Window to open the Certificate Signers' Certificates page and then select the Hongkong Post Root CA certificate entry.

    (If Hongkong Post Root CA certificate entry does not exist, you have to download this Root CA certificate from Hongkong Post CA web site : www.hongkongpost.gov.hk)
  5. Click the Edit button on the right side. The Edit A Certification Authority window will appear.


  6. Click the check boxes for the first 2 options above to accept the Certification Authority (i.e. Hongkong Post Root CA) for those purposes. Click OK to continue.


  7. Then select the Hongkong Post e-Cert CA certificate entry and click the Edit button on the right side. The Edit A Certification Authority window will appear. (If Hongkong Post e-Cert CA certificate entry does not exist, you have to download this e-Cert CA certificate from Hongkong Post CA web site: www.hongkongpost.gov.hk)


  8. Click the check boxes for the first 2 options above to accept the Certification Authority (i.e. Hongkong Post e-Cert CA) for those purposes. Click OK to continue.


  9. Under Certificates, click the Yours link.
    The Your Certificates page opens, displaying your certificates.


  10. Select your e-Cert and click "Verify" button



    Important:
    The PKCS#12 file is only a temporary storage file and not protected by the e-cert Locker. When you have finished using your certificate in the application (browser, messaging program, etc.), you must immediately delete the PKCS#12 file from your computer (using Windows Explorer) and you must also remove it from the Recycle Bin as well. If you fail to delete the PKCS#12 file, you may forget about it and this could be a security danger. You may move the PKCS#12 file to a floppy disk and keep it in safe place as a backup of your key pairs and certificate.

ii) Sending a secure e-mail

To send a secure e-mail

  1. Click the Mailbox icon in the footer of Netscape browser to start the Messenger mail program.
  2. Click the New Message button.
  3. Fill in Address (To:), Subject and contents.


  4. Click the Message Sending Options icon.

    A window pane opens. This window pane allows you to choose several security options.
    You can choose options for Encrypted, Signed, and Return Receipt.
  5. Check the boxes for Encrypted and/or Signed, as shown in the screen above.
  6. Click the Send button.

    Note:
    If you want to send an encrypted message, you need to have the public key of the receiver to complete the encryption process. The public key can be obtained either from the receiver's CA public directory or received through a previous signed message from the receiver. The public key of other people can be stored in your PC for future use.
